Thriller codes and conventions quick cuts, shadows, tense music, and changing shot angles

Audiences watch thrillers because Some people may write off thrillers as adrenaline pumping designed only to shock. thrillers are a safe space to explore the more sinister side of humanity.

Se7en, the sixth sense, shutter island, batman the dark knight, parasite

The movie panic room is a thriller as it has the codes of conventions of a thriller which are quick cuts, shadows, tense non diegetic music, and changing shot angles. An example of one these could be the use of quick cuts of the mum and the robbers when she is trying to get the phone this could show the intensity and pressure on the mum to get to safety also it could imply that there could be danger for the mum and daughter. The use of quick cuts build excitement for the audience this is the main reason for thrillers. For the audience to be nervous and exited to know what might happen next.

The audience decodes this is a thriller because of the use of quick cuts from the mother and daughter stuck in the room and then it pans back to the robbers. This creates an intensity because of the speed of the cuts which show the urgency and pressure a usual thriller would have.    Another example could be the use of music in the movie and how it uses a dramatic effect to show the pressure of the mother. An example of this could be how she needs to save her child. The use of this music shows the intensity and pressure because of The fast use of notes and beats can create a feeling of racing against time we can see this when the mother is trying to get the medicine for her daughter while the robbers are after her.

In this picture we see that there seems to be a confrontation with the robbers and the mother and daughter. There are a lot of signifiers in the picture fr example. The use of dark and bright lighting in this picture shows who is the protagonist and the antagonist another point could be made that the use of the lighting shows the dark part of the movie which is shown by the robbers and how they are robbing and hurting people and the light shows the good

side to the movie of how the mum and daughter are trying to escape and the mum is trying to keep the house and her daughter safe.

The use of shot of the 2 sides of the elevator shows who has the power in this scene. This shown by the use of hight and posture of the robbers and family. For example the robber has more of an aggressive stance and demanding. This use of the stance shows who has the power also the use of hight shows power this is seen on how the family is on the floor showing that they don't have the power in this picture the hight of the picture signifies the power for example we see that the robber is higher than the family showing power and dominance in the picture

The movie misery is a thriller because it shows the traditional codes and conventions of what a thriller is supposed to be. The codes and conventions of a thriller are lighting, shadows, sound and camera angles. An example of these could be the use of shadows and lighting and how it changes through out the movie to show the emotion of the lady

An example of this change of emotion showed by lighting and shadow can be seen when she looks down on Paul Sheldon by using a mid shot which highlights her face. The use of lighting being shun onto her face and the use of dark shadows shows the emotion she has towards Paul. Some emotions that the audince could decode might be she could be feeling anger or fustration. Also, tthe use of the angle of the camera where it is angled low this makes it so that anne is angled higher. This use of a low angle shot shows that anne has the power in this scene. Also, the use of this low angle shot shows the focus of this scene which is anne and her emotion.

Another shot in the movie could be when we see the shot of outside the house. In this shot mise un scene is used. For example, the use of settig shows how the house is isolated and that there is no hope of escape for paul sheldon. Another instance of mise un scene that is used in this shot could the use of the night and the use of moon light alows the audience to

decode that something is going to go wrong for example paul could be in danger.

Another scene in the movie could be when Paul set fire to his book. The use of the fire in this scene shows how he now has the power over Anne. The use of fire could signified purity and how this book doesn't represent purity and that he was forced to write it not out of truth and purity. Also, the use of dark lighting compared to the fire could show how there is hope in making it out of this house. The us of deep focus through the face of Paul shows the power and the fire.

The movie Hancock is an action superhero film because it has the codes and convections of a traditional superhero film. For example, saving people from danger. But despite his problems Hancock main objective is to protect people which is the main idea of a superhero as a protector. The film gives us an antagonist “Red Parker and his gang” who fights and has a problem with Hancock which is traditionally a big aspect in superhero films. A scene we see this could be when we see this could be the scene in the bank when there are civilians endanger. The use of the civilians shows how the antagonist has the power in this scene and shows how he is the antagonist. Through the use of props.

Another significant scene in the movie that represents the codes and conventions of a superhero movie could be when Hancock lifts ray's car to save him from the trainthe use of this scene shows how Hancock is a hero and saves life's. And the use of the wide shot shows how powerful Hancock is and how is able to lift a whole car. Also, the use of lighting in this scene could signified that he is seen as a saviour

Also a point in the movie where we see Hancock not seen as a superhero but almost as a normal human. As if he is being humanised. This is Shown through the scene when we see a child waking up hancock and he is sleeping  on a bench. The us of the child standing and hancock lying down shows how Hancock is seen as a human and not a superhero. Also another thing to consider is his costume and how its not stereotypically a hero suit but almost as a human clothing or a homeless man.

Another point where we see Hancock being a hero could be when we see him saving a cops life and how the use of lighting shows how he is the hero but alos that here is danger. This can be seen through the explosion. The use of this shos how there is danger through the fire and bright light but this could also signifies that Hancock is the light in this scene and how is saving the person from harm.

The movie samaritan is like many classic superheroes where Joe Smith has a hidden identity. He is suposed to be dead but is actually living in secret just like other super heroe flims who disappear after a great battle. It also has the act of villan and hero good and evil we see ths through the good of smaritan hoe smith and the villan bad cyrus. Another example is that there is powers used.

But there are many things that differentiate from superhero films. And example of this could be his age and how we don't see many older superhero's in movies. This could be compared to Hancock and how these two films differentiate from the stereotypical hero films. They have similarities how Samaritan is old and frale and Hancock is young and powerful. Another could how they aren't very popular as Samaritan is a bin man who lives a normal life and Hancock is a drunk alcoholic. Also it could be said that they are similar in personality and how they both are very quiet in their lives and that they almost seem to not be super hero's and have no powers but seem to be almost human.

An example of how Samaritan is seen as a human could be his costume and how his clothing is almost human the use of huma clothing could show that they could be in hiding or a mysterious. This is a good example because it shows how joe is not trying to be in the public eye and that he is trying to be a human the us of hoodies work jackets and boots shows how he is trying to blend in with the rest of the people in the city . This shows his attempt to hide his past and live in an ordinary life .

But to show how the Samaritan is a superhero is a hero could be the scene when he is surrounded by the men with the guns and the fire raging behind him. This shows how powerful Samaritan is. The use of the fire in the scene shows who has the power which is Samaritan. This could also show the past of joe and how he is reverting to his life of violence. Also the use of props in Samaritan shoes the power and violence of bothe the protagonist and antagonist.

In conclusion some similarities of these 2 movies could be the social class that they are i. for example hoe they live and how they are seen in society. For example we see Hancock as  alcoholic that is homeless. And joe is portrayed as a garbage man. We can see that they are both portrayed as lower class people. But some differences could be the age gap
